"Don't judge Beijing on the Olympics alone; the five-ringed circus is merely a sideshow to t
he ancient city's unprecedented growth and rebirth as a First World metropolis. This upward mobility has not only ushered in a new era of wealth and prosperity for those who live in the capital, it has furnished them with a playground to rival any city in the world. We asked some ASW members to share all their best-kept secrets - the best places to eat, drink, shop and relax.

Eat

Beijing's dining scene offers great food from every corner of this culinary giant, as well as a smorgasbord of imported tastes. You cannot come to the capital without trying the Peking Duck at Da Dong, which attracts a good mix of expat and local dinners. Head to the scenic shores of Houhai Lake for a Hakka minority meal at the Han Cang - be sure to nab a table with a view over the water. Those who want to enjoy the novelty of travelling to China and then popping out for 'an English' can head to Fish Nation, but the serious gourmands head west for the Blu Lobster's groundbreaking cuisine.

New restaurant and bar complex 1949 is beginning to create a stir amongst the city's foodies. And rightly so, the converted factory is conveniently close to the heart of the Sanlitun nightlife district and houses several choices: Duck De Chine, which serves what is arguably the city's best roast duck; the rather compact Noodle Bar, which hits the spot with oodles of noodles; the delightfully upscale 1/5 Taverna; and the glass-clad café, Sugar Bar, which offers light fare and an outside bar in a converted well.

Play

If it's good beer and a great pizza you crave then head to Sanlitun's The Tree, a favourite of Natalia Chapliuk. The capital's sultry summer nights are best spent in the garden of Face Bar or on the roof terrace of Q Bar where, according to Bonnie Clarke, you will enjoy the best lychee daiquiris in town. Bed Bar is equally renowned for its mojitos - it's the ramshackle courtyard club that makes it a true atmospheric one-off. The Pavillion draws a mellow and moneyed crowd, but the party faithful head to The World of Suzy Wong for a touch of glamour and to enjoy some great DJs.

Owned by a designer and DJ, Song is the best of the new lounge bars, according to Jack Zhu, founder of local nightlife portal Clubzone.cn. LAN isn't far behind though, thanks to its multi-million dollar Philippe Starck interior, complete with AK-47 standard lamps and masterpieces hanging from the ceiling. The summer sees the opening of Block 8's rooftop beach bar, which features real sand and bikini clad go-go dancers. Patrick Von Wrede lauds its sister establishment i-Ultra for having the best mixed drinks and being a great place to relax after eating at the complex's twin restaurants Haiku and Med. Hardcore clubbers should make a beeline for the clubbing hub at the West Gate of the Workers' Stadium - Cargo is the most popular.

Shop

Beijing is all about the markets! Be sure to sharpen your bargaining skills in preparation for a haggle master class at 3.3 Mall or Yashow Market for low-end designer goods and knock-offs, recommends Natalia Chapliuk. If you really must visit Prada, Diesel, et al. then head to Shin Kong Place, but for bargain designer gear, Bonnie Clarke suggests Nali Mall. Men looking to get suited and booted should pop into Dave's Custom Tailoring, the best of the best, says Max Johnson. Those wanting to load up on great Chinese souvenirs and gifts should visit the former imperial kite makers, Three Stones.

Loaf

Beijing's terrible traffic and packed pavements will inevitably encourage a bit of lounging. Rest for the weary can be found in the garden of the sandwich bar/café Bocota in the summer, or the library/restaurant Bookworm in the winter. The Nanluoguxiang district's old world charms have made it firm favourite with foreign visitors and the Pass-By Bar is the place to sink an afternoon beer and watch the world pass by. Ann Wang recommends visitors combine a visit to the café Timezone 8 with a wander around the Bauhaus-style 798 factory, now a collection of art galleries, studios and funky shops.

Rest

The Olympic Games and Beijing's newfound status as a corporate capital has gifted it with world-class hotels like the Peninsula and the China World Hotel, which both have excellent locations near the Central Business District. But if it is style you want, head to Kapok, nicknamed 'the blur' because of its fibreglass exterior, where cutting-edge cool juxtaposes nicely with its next-door neighbour - the Forbidden City.

Escape

The Great Wall isn't just for tourists - it functions as a getaway for city folk as well. Patrick Von Wrede suggests hiring a cab to drop you off at Jinshanling and then arranging to have it pick you up a 10km and four hour hike away at Simatai. The nearby boutique hotel Commune offers a stylish retreat for those wanting to make a weekend of it, says Bonnie Clarke, who also suggests hopping on a bike and pedalling west to the Fragrant Hills. Further west of the city is Chuandixia, its crumbling Ming Dynasty charms will help you forget the modern world even exists. Spend the day wandering through its pristine courtyards and spend the night sleeping on an old farm-style Kang heated bed. If you're not much of a planner, contact the Beijing Hikers who organise and run fun trips outside the city every weekend."
